Mission San Diego de Alcalá

Our Lady of Guadalupe Apparitions to St. Juan Diego

Youth Drama Friday, December 5, 2014

retirees luncheon 2014-12-10 112 (2) (2)Msgr. Richard Duncanson told the crowd of over 200 that he was pleased when Sister Mary Kiely, osf, announced at a staff meeting that she wanted to do a drama about the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego. Sister Mary had a plan for a simple but beautiful drama and wanted to talk to the Knights of Columbus to help with a Tamale Dinner following the drama.  Well, Friday night at 6:30 pm in the St. Francis Chapel, Msgr. Duncanson, pastor of Mission San Diego de Alcalá, was overwhelmed by the production the youth community produced.

With just seven students from the Mission’s Youth Community, and a small group of helpers, we enjoyed a wonderful version of the apparitions.  Director Samuel Valdez worked with the youth for two months, going over their lines every Sunday afternoon. Patricia Garland and Raquel Valley translated the script and Tony and Carmen Falcon assisted Sister Mary with the details of the production. The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in Calexico provided the wonderful costumes, Rhonda Sosa, manager of the Mission Gift Shop, provided decorations for the California Room, and Patricia Perez donated two beautiful flower arrangements.

The Cast was Julian Eberman and Alexander Karaniwan as narrators of this powerful story of a great miracle which happened over 500 years ago in Mexico City. Our Lady was played by Odalys Ugarte and Saint Juan Diego was played by Nathan Tu. Bishop Juan de Zumárraga was played by Sebastian Mason, who wore former pastor of Mission San Diego, Thomas Prendergast’s cassock. Juan Bernardino, the uncle of Juan Diego, was played by Diego Sanchez, and the Bishop’s Assistant was played by Ernesto Romero. All did a wonderful job with their lines; you almost forgot they weren’t the real people of this story.

After the drama everyone moved to the California Room in the lower level of St. Francis for a homemade dinner of Tamales, green salad, rice and beans and dessert of Arroz con Leche. Albert Gonzalez and The Knights of Columbus, Council 9498, along with Alma Skerston, Cheryl Doss and Max and Lisa Worthington, and all their helpers, did a great job on the dinner. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
